On May 16, the 2025 Shanshui Forum at National Chengchi University came to a brilliant close! Centered on the themes of interdisciplinary learning and innovative teaching, the event brought together nearly a hundred passionate educators, administrators, and students from within and beyond NCCU. Together, they exchanged ideas, challenged assumptions, and envisioned the future of teaching and learning. 🔥

📌 The EMI Resource Center participated in Session II: Innovative Teaching in EMI, hosted by our director, Professor Siaw-Fong Chung (Deputy Executive Director of the Office of Bilingual and Multicultural Education Promotion and Director of the EMI Resource Center, NCCU). This session spotlighted two presenters from NCCU and welcomed three distinguished discussants from peer institutions, who engaged in thoughtful dialogue around real-world EMI practices and pedagogical innovation.

✏️ Professor Jack Wu, Director of the International Master's Program in Economics and faculty member of the Department of Public Finance at NCCU, opened the session with insights into how he dismantles linguistic barriers in economics classrooms. His flipped-classroom approach, which includes video previews, active learning strategies, Think-Pair-Share tasks, and English-language video presentations, integrates multilingual resources and contextualized instruction. The model offers a compelling response to many of the persistent challenges in EMI teaching.

📖 Assistant Professor Shun-Nan Chiang from NCCU’s International College of Innovation followed with a reflection on EMI as a tool for cross-cultural engagement. Using his interdisciplinary course as an example, he shared how thoughtful course design can accommodate students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds. He highlighted how peer collaboration and managed peer pressure can foster stronger English learning environments and multi-level engagement.

💬 In the panel discussion, Professor Shao-Ting Hung—Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Executive Director of the Office of Bilingual Education at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology—offered a dual-framework analysis of the EMI approaches presented, emphasizing EMI’s role in prompting educators to reflect critically on their teaching methods. Professor Li-Jung Wang, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at National Central University and Deputy Executive Director of the Bilingual Teaching Resource Center, responded with a student-centered perspective, clarifying the distinctions between content-based English and general English proficiency. She also discussed how her university’s reform of freshman English into ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses has paved new pedagogical pathways. Lastly, Associate Professor Ching-Fen Chang, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Director of the Center for EMI Teaching and Learning, shared reflections grounded in her own EMI teaching experience, contributing perspectives that deepened the collective dialogue.
