On March 20, 2025, the NCCU EMI Resource Center hosted a lecture titled "Bridging EMI with Inquiry-based ESAP Project." Associate Professor Wen-Chun Chen, Director of the Language Center and Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at National Chung Cheng University, was invited as the keynote speaker to share insights on integrating Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) into EAP courses while aligning with the learning model of the 108 Curriculum.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The event was opened by Professor Siaw-Fong Chung, Director of the NCCU EMI Resource Center. Following the introduction, Assoc. Prof. Chen presented a content and language-integrated approach to EAP course design. The speaker emphasized project-based learning, which encourages students to explore social issues, enhance critical thinking, and develop interdisciplinary skills. The speaker suggested that first-year EAP courses should prioritize output-driven learning activities and be adjusted flexibly based on students’ background knowledge.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Assoc. Prof. Chen also argued that traditional English writing courses need a paradigm shift. She introduced the Divergence → Convergence framework and highlighted the importance of incorporating elements such as Communication, Journalism, Visualization, Debate, EAP & ESP, Tech & Tools, and Political Science into academic English training. Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an example, she demonstrated how worksheets, discussions, and task-based activities can enhance learning outcomes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During the Q&A session, some teachers raised concerns about students using AI tools like ChatGPT for writing. The speaker suggested that teachers should engage in dialogues with students to track their learning process and help them understand the impact of AI on their development, fostering independent thinking and writing skills.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The lecture attracted enthusiastic participation from faculty and students across various departments. Attendees highly recognized the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and inquiry-based teaching models. The NCCU EMI Resource Center remains committed to advancing language education and research, bringing more high-quality academic exchanges in the future!
