Yesterday, October 24th, the NCCU EMI Resource Center invited Dr. Hui-Chin Yeh, Distinguished Professor from the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, to deliver an insightful lecture titled "AI-Assisted Language Learning: Transformation to Self-Regulated and Personalized Learning." Dr. Yeh’s research expertise includes technology-assisted education, particularly focusing on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in language learning, with a dedication to improving teaching effectiveness for rural teachers.
The event was opened by the center's director, Professor Siaw-Fong Chung, and was conducted online, attracting nearly 200 participants. The lecture focused on the transformation of learning and teaching in the AI era, emphasizing the importance of self-directed learning. Dr. Yeh pointed out that students can use AI tools to strengthen their language skills and enhance their overall performance in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. At the same time, AI tools can help teachers optimize their teaching methods and improve classroom efficiency and outcomes.
Dr. Yeh began by introducing the concept of multimodal learning theory, where learners absorb information through various sensory channels such as visual, auditory, and textual modes. With the support of multimodal information, learners can better understand and retain knowledge, improving information processing and memory retention. Dr. Yeh then elaborated on the application of AI in language learning and presented the "ETC" (Extract, Transform, Combine) concept. This process involves "E(xtract)"—obtaining information, "T(ransform)"—converting data formats, and "C(ombine)"—integrating different tools. She demonstrated this through examples, such as using mobile devices to recognize textbook content, generating songs via ChatGPT, and transforming text into music with “Suno,” showing practical AI applications.
Furthermore, Dr. Yeh provided demonstrations of several practical and free AI tools. For instance, “Chat Everywhere” can generate vocabulary and images based on student levels and also assist with visual learning. Another tool, “Speechify,” transforms text into speech and addresses the lack of auditory support in Taiwan's English learning environment, thereby improving students' listening and speaking skills. She also demonstrated how AI tools could be used for personalized learning, such as "Relingo," which analyzes articles to provide targeted vocabulary exercises. Other tools, such as “Character AI,” simulate dialogues with different characters and help students enhance their speaking abilities, while “NotebookLM” generates Q&A content and podcasts from texts, which can provide learners with diverse learning experiences.
During the discussion, Dr. Yeh offered recommendations for EMI courses. She emphasized that teachers should provide more opportunities for students to engage in hands-on activities and encourage active participation not only during class but also beyond the classroom. By utilizing AI tools, a 24/7 continuous learning environment can be created. This approach not only strengthens students’ learning outcomes but also enhances the whole of the course, which can allow students to consolidate and extend their knowledge anytime, anywhere.
This lecture not only introduced participants to a wide range of effective and practical AI tools but also improved the understanding of AI’s application in language learning. Through hands-on activities, participants became familiar with the use of various tools. Dr. Yeh’s presentation provided a wealth of knowledge and practical experience, helping participants better understand how AI can be a useful aid in language learning. We sincerely thank Dr. Yeh for her sharing, which has given us a more comprehensive understanding of AI-assisted language learning and helped participants apply these tools to the teaching and learning practices.
