We were privileged to be invited by the Center for Teaching and Learning Development to present EMI teaching techniques and demonstrations for our new teachers during the faculty orientation.
The director of the EMI Resource Center, Siaw-Fong Chung, provided insights into the concept of the "Zone of Proximal Development" and demonstrated how the EMI course can support both content and language development for students in EMI classrooms. Prof. Chung also engaged participants in a debate discussion activity, allowing them to practice expressing different perspectives on the social issue. At the end, Prof. Chung introduced the abundant resources and activities available at the EMI Resource Center, which can provide support not only for teachers but also for students.
Associate Professor Yi-Ping Huang from the Department of English at NCCU introduced the "Backward Design" approach in EMI course design. Assoc. Prof. Huang explained how to define intended learning outcomes to better engage students with appropriate scaffolding and encouraged teachers to think and practice these strategies. Additionally, Assoc. Prof. Huang recommended AI-enhanced tools for EMI lesson planning and delivery, such as Gamma and Formative, to help teachers create more effective classrooms.
Yu-Che Yen, a PhD student and at the same time our center's writing tool consultant demonstrated the academic writing tool Writefull . This tool offers language feedback and writing support for both educational and research purposes.
We thank all the teachers for your enthusiastic participation today! Your engagement and collaboration reflect your passion for teaching. We hope that the comprehensive overview of the EMI course objectives planning and the introduction of AI tools will assist your future EMI teaching.
