開場時, Sr. Fernando Schmidt 風趣地用「Chile is called Chile, but we don't eat chilli!」

Sr. Fernando Schmidt

On Friday, December 13, 2024, the lecture "Exploring the Charm and Potential of Chile: Chile—Creating Future!," presented by Sr. Fernando Schmidt, Director of Chilean Trade Office Taiwan, was held in Room 250206, Research Building, NCCU. The event attracted many students and was hosted by Dr. Cheng-Han Wu from the Department of English. The atmosphere was lively, and the audience response was positive!
Highlights from the Lecture:
The session began humorously with Sr. Fernando Schmidt stating, "Chile is called Chile, but we don’t eat chilli!" This clever pun not only sparked laughter but also clarified that Chilean cuisine is not predominantly spicy, instantly breaking the ice with the audience.
Chile and Taiwan: A Collaborative Future in Energy
Sr. Fernando Schmidt explored the potential for collaboration between Chile and Taiwan in addressing climate change and energy challenges. He highlighted Chile’s proactive efforts in combating droughts and wildfires, alongside its ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. These initiatives align closely with Taiwan’s climate policies and show a shared commitment to advancing sustainable development.
Taiwan, with its robust semiconductor industry and high energy demands, has incorporated its 2050 net-zero emissions goal into the Climate Change Response Act this year, initiating a range of low-carbon transition projects. Meanwhile, Chile is emerging as a leader in renewable energy and offering enormous potential for partnership. By exchanging expertise and fostering collaboration, both countries can build a more sustainable supply chain, optimize logistics, modernize industries, and create a win-win scenario.
Notably, Sr. Fernando Schmidt is not only the Director of Chilean Trade Office Taiwan but also an alumnus of NCCU’s International Doctoral Program in Asia Pacific Studies! His achievements serve as an inspiring example for current students and encourage them to explore their future with a global perspective.
We thank all the students and faculty who participated in this event. We hope this lecture deepened your understanding of Chile—a nation full of potential—and look forward to seeing more collaboration between Taiwan and Chile in the future!
