On April 28, the EMI TA Midterm Training organized by the EMI Resource Center at National Chengchi University (NCCU) kicked off with great energy! A total of 82 enthusiastic teaching assistants (TAs) joined the session, engaging in peer interaction, problem-solving, and collaborative learning that brought vitality and critical thinking to the event.🔥

The session began with a warm welcome by Professor Siaw-Fong Chung, Director of the Center and followed by an inspiring keynote by Assistant Professor Cheng-Han Wu titled “TA POWER: Let’s Shine in an EMI Classroom ✨.” Professor Wu emphasized that TAs are not merely language assistants but also essential bridges in EMI classrooms. He encouraged participants to incorporate pop culture, humor, and relatable references into their teaching designs, even quoting Buzz Lightyear’s famous line—“To infinity and beyond! 🚀”—to show how cultural familiarity can naturally enhance language learning.

💡The most popular part of the training was the hands-on workshop “Challenges in EMI Classes,” co-designed and led by Abbie Lee and Rachel Lin from the Center. Special thanks to the staff of the NCCU Bilingual Education and Multicultural Promotion Office, Assistant Professor Chen-An Chang from the Department of English, and all Center members who facilitated the activity as station leaders. The workshop was based on prior feedback from an EMI TA survey, which revealed that many TAs still felt unclear about the formal definition and practical principles of EMI. Therefore, the workshop specifically included realistic classroom scenarios and strategies to strengthen participants’ understanding and application of EMI concepts.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This activity was designed with eight scenarios that reflect the practical challenges faced by TAs, including language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, discussion facilitation, classroom interaction design, emergency responses, translanguaging practices, and multicultural support. Each scenario integrates relevant teaching theories and practical strategies. For example, Translanguaging refers to encouraging students to flexibly use their multiple language resources—such as their native language and English—during the learning process to enhance understanding and expression. Scaffolding involves providing appropriate guidance and support as students acquire new knowledge and skills, such as offering examples, sentence structures, or key prompts, to help them gradually complete learning tasks independently.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Among the scenarios, the “Cross-Cultural Conflict” simulation proved the most challenging. TAs practiced using I-statements, guided questioning, and clarification techniques to support students in resolving misunderstandings. The session sparked vibrant discussions and a spirit of shared learning throughout!✨
🎁The event concluded with a lucky draw where five lucky TA teams took home special gifts—ending the day on a high note! Feedback was overwhelmingly positive: many TAs said the training was both practical and confidence-boosting for their upcoming EMI teaching tasks.

📅 Mark your calendar! Our EMI TA Final Training Session will be held on June 5—with even more interactive and engaging activities in store. Stay tuned and come ready for the next challenge!
