EMI(English as a Medium of Instruction)觀議課活動,由財務管理系邱健嘉助理教授主講,課程主題為「投資學 Investment」。

The NCCU EMI Resource Center recently hosted an EMI classroom observation and feedback activity, which featured Dr. Jian-Jia Chiou, Assistant Professor in the Department of Finance, NCCU. The observed course, titled Investment, was conducted entirely in English and introduced students to fundamental theories and practical applications in investment, including securities markets, asset pricing models, and investment strategies. The course also incorporated coding exercises, which enabled students from diverse academic backgrounds to build both technical and disciplinary competencies in an English-immersive environment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To enhance the observation and professional exchange, three distinguished EMI experts were invited to attend: Mr. Steven Murray, CEO of English Total Immersion (ETI) and Course Director and Teacher Trainer for the Trinity CertPT program; Professor Siaw-Fong Chung, Director of the NCCU EMI Resource Center and Professor in the Department of English; and Professor Eric Yen-liang Lin, Chair and Professor in the Department of English at National Taipei University of Technology. Before the session began, Dr. Chiou provided the experts with an overview of the course objectives and instructional methods, emphasizing his goal for students to acquire basic coding skills by the end of the first class—laying a solid foundation for upcoming investment analysis topics.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During the lesson, Dr. Chiou fluently introduced key investment concepts in English and seamlessly transitioned into practical coding exercises. He actively engaged with students, offered on-the-spot guidance, and demonstrated strong awareness of their learning needs throughout the session.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the post-observation feedback discussion, the expert panel commended Dr. Chiou for his well-paced instruction and clear English delivery, both of which facilitated students’ understanding of complex content. Professor Lin suggested incorporating more transitional phrases to help students follow the progression of the lesson and recommended alternating brief lectures with practice-based activities to ease cognitive load. Mr. Murray emphasized the value of peer collaboration and recommended using tag questions to promote classroom interaction and monitor comprehension. Professor Chung praised Dr. Chiou’s enthusiasm and thoughtful lesson structure, which highlighted the class as a strong example of EMI pedagogy in action.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This EMI classroom observation not only fostered professional exchange and reflection among educators but also showcased Dr. Jian-Jia Chiou’s commitment and expertise in English-medium instruction. The event provided valuable insights and further advanced EMI teaching practices at NCCU.

After the event, Steven Murray visited our center in person to continue in-depth discussions on potential future collaboration in the field of EMI education with Professor Siaw-Fong Chung. The conversation focused particularly on the Trinity College London-accredited CertPT (Certificate for Practising Teachers) program and the internationally renowned Oxford EMI training program. Both parties engaged in substantive dialogue on how these two internationally recognized professional development courses can support teachers in enhancing their EMI teaching skills, improving student learning outcomes, and raising overall teaching quality. They also shared valuable insights into course design and implementation, providing meaningful reference points for the center’s ongoing efforts to promote high-quality EMI education.
